Mustang Memo - 1/6/23

Sometimes students need to borrow clothing while at school. If your child has borrowed clothing from the health room, please wash and return it as soon as possible. We are running low on size 5/6, 7/8 pants, leggings, and undergarments. Gently used donations would be greatly appreciated.

Happy New Year! These past few months have flown by, and I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know all of our students. As I begin to wrap up lessons on Conflict Resolution with K-2 and the Bullying Prevention Unit with 3-5, I wanted to share just a glimpse of what your child has been learning. 

Students in K-2 have learned to distinguish between “small” problems and “big” problems. Small problems are ones they are smart enough and strong enough to solve on their own and big problems are those they need to seek help from an adult for. Students can resolve their own small problems by picking two of Kelso’s Choices. Students understand that if the problem persists after they’ve tried 2 strategies, they can then seek help from an adult. 

Students in 3-5 are finishing up a unit on Bullying Prevention. Here students have learned how to identify bullying, and what to do when they recognize it, how to report it, refuse it, and support those that are targeted. In the closing lesson, we will focus on how to be an upstander.

Finally, in honor of National Thank You month, I want to express how grateful I am to be at this school and part of your community. My son Barrett and I look forward to coming to school every day and it’s been such a gift working with your children.

We have circulated almost 18,000 books since the beginning of the school year.  Way to go, Mustang Readers!

K-2 students should return library books in their plastic bags.  This truly helps preserve them.

We are looking for an every other week commitment to help out with:
Mrs. Wytko's 2nd Grade Class (Thursdays 2:15 p.m.-3:00 p.m.)

Celebrate your child's birthday and support the Moorlands Library! We will be continuing the online model through an Amazon Wish list Ms. Schroeder has put together.  (You are more than welcome to purchase the hardcover copy at your favorite bookstore as well.)  By donating to the Birthday Book Club, you will endow our school library with a book chosen by your child. Once purchased, the book will be processed and cataloged.  During the month of your child’s birthday (or summer half birthday), a Birthday Book Club bookplate will be placed inside stating that it was donated to the Moorlands Library. Your child will be the first student to read the new book before it is returned to the library for all to enjoy.

Join us February 1st from 6-8pm at Lynnwood Bowl and Skate!  Let’s roll! Tickets are $30 per skater *includes rentals, 2 slices of pizza and a drink! No cost for non-skaters *includes just watching your skater.

Please note: Due to the capacity of the venue, we will be limiting the total number of tickets we can sell. The event could sell out.  All profits raised go towards the end of the year’s 5th Grade Celebration.  A caregiver is expected to accompany their students.  Skating liability is owned by the ticket purchaser.

Join the Moorlands PTA on February 3rd at Inglewood Golf Course from 7pm-11pm.  It's been 3 long years but we are proud to bring back a Parents Night Out, to remember.  Grab a sitter and head out for a night on the town.  Click HERE for additional details and tickets!

The Department of Health (DOH) requires schools to inform families and students about  COVID-19 case numbers and potential outbreaks. This week, there were a total of five (none on campus) confirmed cases at our school. The accuracy of our data depends on self-reporting. Thank you for continuing to let the school know if your child tests positive for COVID-19. To view additional information, including school and district trends visit the District’s COVID-19 data dashboard. The dashboard is updated weekly on Monday evenings. 

If your child is exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19  keep them home and test for COVID-19. Families can order free COVID-19 tests from the state. Together, we can keep our schools healthy and safe.  

Rapid antigen testing supplies continue to be available. Please let the office know if you need home tests.

Hi Moorlands families! After an AMAZING Girls on the Run season last year, I'd love to keep it going and bring it back to Moorlands for Spring 2023! Girls on the Run is a program for girls in 3rd-5th grade that encourages them to recognize their individual strengths and celebrate connections with others, while incorporating physical activity to inspire an appreciation for fitness and healthy habits.  It's an amazing program!

Before we can commit to being a host site at Moorlands again, I need 2-3 coaching volunteers!  The program runs for about 10 weeks starting the week of March 14th and finishing the week of May 21st.  Practices are twice a week for 90 minutes each (after school - days and times TBD by coaches).  Each season culminates with a Girls on the Run 5K event where ALL the Puget Sound GOTR teams get together for one final run!  Coaches don't need to be parents or have a daughter in the program, but they do need to be at least 18 years old, attend a coach training session and get a background check.

School Meal Accounts - Register on Titan

NSD moved from PayPams to Titan in 2020 but many families have not registered in Titan yet due to meals being free for the last two years. All account balances were transferred automatically from PayPams to Titan, but families need to register in order to view or add money to student accounts.

Apply for Free & Reduced Price Meals

Families will need to reapply for benefits by the end of September.
